We've collected all the important words and terms you may need to navigate confidently in the hospitality industry.

Hotel Technology Terms

Application programming interface (API)
An API (Application Programming Interface) is a programming language that allows a software to talk to other software – and also defines how that conversation takes place. An example – think of a mobile app that uses your phone’s camera – the creators of the app didn’t have to program how the camera represents images on your phone, or take images, they just used an API that can access the pre-existing framework.

Application
An application is a computer software package that performs a specific function directly for an end user. Examples of applications include word processors, image editors and communication platforms. Applications can be used on any devices such as PCs, tablets, smart phones, smart watches. 

Channel manager
A channel manager is a tool that helps keep your calendar—including data on availability and rates—synchronized with online distribution platforms.

Cloud computing
Cloud computing is the delivery of different services through the Internet, including data storage, servers, databases, networking, and software. Cloud-based softwares makes it possible to store your data on the internet (and not in an installed software) and access it anywhere, anytime and from any device.

Domain name
A domain name is your website name. A domain name is the address where Internet users can access your website. A domain name is used for finding and identifying computers on the Internet.

Property Managament Sotware (PMS)
A property management software can help you automate your hotel's everyday tasks, spares you time and make your operation more streamlined by organising your reservations and housekeeping in an online calendar. It can aslo help you do the online invoicing, synchronise your rates and availabilty and increase the number of direct, comisison free bookings.

Software as a Service (SaaS)
SaaS (software as a service) is a cloud-based software solution in which software providers deliver applications to users over the internet. SaaS companies provide access to their software most commonly via a website or apps.

Smart lock
Smart locks are keyless door locks that allow you to open your door without a physical key. Many models feature a numeric keypad on the lock for entering a unique access code. A smart lock connects to your hotel's WiFi network, which allows it to receive the code or smartphone command to lock or unlock.

SSL security
SSL (Secure Socket layer) security is a security technology and also a certificate which guarantees that personal data of visitors,- who are browsing your website -  is being stored securely and it also prevents criminals from reading and modifying the information transferred.

Widget
Widgets provide you with quick access to information without requiring you to open the app that manages this information. An example is an Internet Booking engine widget, provides your website visiotors a quick way to book a room at your hotel instead of being directed to an OTA's site or make the same resevation via email or phone.

Reservation import
Importing both past and future reservations into the new PMS when switching between softwares. This is important for maintaining historical trends and correct future occupancy.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the process of optimising your website's online content so that a search engine (for eg. Google) likes to show it as a top result for searches of a certain keyword. This could help you put your hotel's website to more visible place in search engines and therefore generate more reservations.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
Search engine Marketing is the act of using paid strategies to increase visibility in search engines. You can purchase ads, add trending keywords to your website that can give you a better ranking on Google's search result page for example.

Social Media Marketing (SMM)
Socal Media Marketing is the act of creating paid strategies for social media platforms to drive more traffic to your hotel's profile and to help convince visitors to make a specific action there, such as visit your website, make a reservation etc.,  or you can simply promote your services as well. 

PCI compliance
If you are a merchant of any size accepting credit cards, you must be in compliance with PCI. The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard is a security standard which ensures that you have secure technological environment for procsessing credit card payments. Softwares with this standard can manage your credit card payments without any risk.

Multi factor authentication
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is an identification methofology for digital users to gain access to a resource such as an application, online account etc. They need to identify themselves with at least two different methodologies, for ex. with a QR code AND email address or with a user name AND finger print. You will need MFA to access your SabeeApp account.

XML
XML stands for eXtensible Markup Language, and its much like HTML. XML is a programming language which provides connectivity and syncing between different systems in real time. For example, many of our integrations are connected to SabeeApp via XML.

Integration
In terms of SabeeApp, an integration is when we startegically cooperate with an other tech compnay to add more functionalities to our system. Inegrations are not developed by us but they are seamlessly integrated to SabeeApp. 

iCal
Ical referes to Internet Calendar where you can store calendar information online. iCal is usually used as a medium of storing reservation information. Through iCal, a hotel owner is able to keep track of room availability in real time.

Beside the basic features of SabeeApp (Property Management System + Internet Booking Engine + Channel Manager) you can choose from different extra modules (SabeePay, Unified Inbox, Guest Advisor) which can help your opreation even more.

Google Analytics
Service offered by Google that generates detailed statistics about a website's traffic and traffic sources and measures conversions and sales.

Call to action
"A piece of website content, generally in the form of a button, which encourges a viewer to perform a specific act, typically taking the form of an instruction or directive (e.g., “book now” or “click here”).

Dashboard
A dashboard is an online interface which provides at-a-glance views of your key performance indicators, ability to manage property and user settings in one location. It shows you what was happening at the different departments of your hotel within a specific time frame.

Google Tag Manager
Tags are snippets of code which can be added to your site to collect information about the site's performance and what actions were made by your visitors. You can easily see what parts of your site did they click,  how much time did they spend on your website, which services were they interested the most? Google Tag Manager is a tag management system (TMS) that allows you to quickly gain infromation from tags and use them smartly  without having to touch the source code (the code with which your site was programmed)

Landing page
A web page which serves as the entry point for a website or a particular section of a website.  A landing page is the page whre a visitor arrives at on your website after clicking on your online ad.  A landing page allows visitors to accomplish a specific goal such as fill out a survey, gain information abuto rooms etc.

Internet booking engine (IBE)
An Internet Booking Engine (IBE) is an online hotel booking system that can be embedded on your website so that potential guests who visit your page can easily make a reservation on the spot, without being redirected to OTAs.
